Alarm fatigue is not a new problem: it has been documented in hospital settings for years. What is new is the scale at which it is now relevant. The real cost of alarm fatigue in point-of-care devices
POC devices are designed for high sensitivity: the side effect is a constant stream of alerts, most of which require no action. Clinicians adapt quickly: they learn that most notifications can safely be ignored, and they start treating them accordingly.
The problem is that this habit does not stay selective. Once the threshold for ignoring alerts drops, legitimate warnings get missed alongside the noise. For point-of-care devices, where the value proposition is continuous monitoring, this is not a peripheral concern. It is the central adoption risk.
Strategy 1: Alerts that adapt to the individual
The most direct response to alarm fatigue is making alerts smarter: not just more sensitive, but more selective and contextualised.
